UNISON Political Fund

24th September

Like all trade unions, UNISON is required in law to have a Political Fund for the purposes of campaigning generally and specifically to affiliate or donate to any political party.

UNISON is unique in the establishment of its Political Fund in giving members four options, to join 1) the General Political Fund, for the purposes of general campaigning, 2) the Affiliated Fund which is connected to the Labour Party, 3) contribute to both, or 4) opt out of any part of the fund.

Mike Kirby, Scottish Secretary said "I would stress the importance of the trade union having a properly resourced fund if we are to adequately represent members on the range of issues.”

The law requires trades unions to ballot their membership every ten years on the continuation of the fund and UNISON will be holding a ballot in November this year.
